Composite Fillings

Composite fillings blend in with the remaining natural part of the tooth due to their natural tooth coloring.

What is a composite filling?

The term composite refers to the actual filling material which is a mixture of glass or quartz filler in a resin medium.

Advantages of composite fillings?

Composite fillings are durable and resistant to fracture in restorations that need to withstand chewing pressure. Less tooth structure is removed when Dr. Simonsen prepares the tooth, and this may result in a smaller filling than with of an amalgam.

How are composite fillings installed?

Composites are bonded to the tooth, allowing for a more conservative repair for the tooth. Composite fillings are subject to stain and discoloration over time. The life expectancy of a white filling depends greatly on where it is in your mouth and how much pressure is put on it when you bite.

Where are they used?

Composite fillings are commonly used to repair front teeth that have chipped or worn. When possible, the bonding of composite material to front teeth is generally much less expensive than crowns or veneers. However, bonding does not generally last as long as veneers or crowns.

Why use composite fillings?

• to restore small to medium sized cavities.
• to restore a chipped front tooth.
• to restore a cavity on a front tooth.

What does getting a composite filling involve?

First, your Beaverton, OR dentist will answer any questions you have and then will apply anesthetic to the tooth requiring the composite filling.

Then Dr. Simonsen will thoroughly remove the decay that is present and prepare the tooth to successfully bond with the composite filling material. A blue light will be used to turn the composite material from soft to hard and durable.
