Root Canals

Dental team performing a root canal procedure on a patient in a modern dental office. If you need a root canal treatment that means you have an infection in your tooth's pulp, the center of your tooth. Pulp is the part of your tooth that is made up of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. If you need a root canal our dentist at Simonsen Dental can perform a treatment to repair your badly damaged tooth by removing the pulp instead of your whole tooth. The term "root canal" comes from the method of cleaning tiny canals inside of your tooth's root.

Do I Need A Root Canal Procedure?

If you need a root canal, our dentist will work on the soft core of your tooth called the pulp. If your pulp is infected, the area extends from the visible part of your tooth called the crown down to the tip of your tooth's root in your jawbone. If your tooth has been cracked, chipped, or if you have a cavity, then bacteria will be able to spread into the pulp of your tooth. If your tooth has been injured, it may cause pulp damage and inflammation. Going without treatment for an extended time, bacteria and decaying material will cause you to have a serious infection or tooth abscess. When the pulp dies, this means that you will suffer loss of your tooth and bone structure. Signs that you need a root canal procedure done promptly could include a hole in your tooth, tooth pain, gum swelling, swelling in your throat and face, and temperature sensitivity in your tooth.

What May Happen During A Root Canal Procedure?

If you get a root canal, it may be performed by a general dentist or an endodontist and will require two visits. When x-rays are taken, they will be able to determine the extent of the decay precisely so we will do these during your first visit. With these photos, we will be able to effectively remove all decay affecting your smile.

Now our dentist will be able to access your tooth's pulp and remove the infected area using a laser, drill, air abrasion instrument, and small dental tools. Finally, our dentist will flush and clean out the area, then fill it temporarily which may prepare you for your next appointment.

The final stage of your root canal will involve our dentist removing the filling and placing a crown over your tooth. If you need a root canal procedure it is because there is extensive damage to your tooth; therefore your treatment will include placing a crown over your tooth to restore its structure. If you receive a crown during a dental procedure, it may be made of gold, porcelain, or porcelain-fused-to-metal.

Where Can I Get My Root Canal Procedure?

Root canals are not painful, and our dentists will use local anesthetics and the most advanced dentistry to make sure that you remain as comfortable as possible. Most people feel little to no pain during their root canal procedure, and living with a decayed tooth without treatment would end up being far more painful. Allow our dental professionals at Simonsen Dental to provide you with professional care for your root canal treatment. Call our office today by dialing (503) 213-7004.
