Dental Crowns

Family with seemles dental crowns. What is a dental crown?

A crown restores a tooth it to its original shape and size by encasing the tooth in a type of cap. Crowns strengthen and protect the tooth giving it a longer life than it would have using other types of restorations.

There are three common types of crowns:
All Porcelain (tooth colored)
Porcelain Fused To Metal (PFM)
Gold.

All Porcelain Crowns

All Porcelain Crowns are usually recommended for anterior teeth, which are your front teeth only. This is because there is a high risk of fracturing this type of crown when used to restore back teeth where chewing is of more impact.

Porcelain Crowns Fused To Metal

A Metal based crown with Porcelain baked to the outside to make it more visually appealing. This allows the patient a crown that is tooth colored but offers more durability than all Porcelain. The risk of this type of crown is the outside porcelain chipping off, exposing the metal underneath.

Gold Crowns

Gold Crowns offer high durability! They are recommended for back teeth, where the crown is not seen as easily. Gold Crowns are often great solutions for people that grind or clinch their teeth. They are most like your natural teeth in feel and your tissue adapts best to this material. Less actual tooth structure is removed to place this type of crown.

If a crown is needed, Dr. Simonsen will discuss what type of crown would be best for you.

Why do I need a crown?

There are many reasons to get a dental crown including:
•  Fractured fillings.
•  Large fillings.
•  Cosmetic enhancement.
•  Decayed teeth.
•  Tooth has had a root canal.

Dental Crown Procedure

Crown procedures require a minimum of two appointments.

First Appointment

Dr. Simonsen will take impressions that will be used to create your custom crown. He will also create a temporary crown which will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks while your new crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory.

Temporary Crown

While the tooth is numb, your Beaverton dentist will prepare the tooth by shaping the surface to properly fit the crown and removing any decay. Your temporary crown will be placed with temporary cement and your bite will be checked to ensure you are biting properly.

Second Appointment

With your new permanent crown, Dr. Simonsen will remove your temporary crown, clean the tooth, and your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.

Dental Crown Care

You will be given care instructions and encouraged to keep regular dental visits with Dr. Simonsen to check your crown. Proper oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing, will help extend the life of your new crown.
