Tooth Extraction

A playful illustration of a sad unhealthy tooth being extracted by a dental tool, surrounded by smiling white teeth. If you are visiting the dentist to have a tooth removed, the procedure is known as a dental extraction. At Simonsen Dental, our primary goal is always to preserve and restore your natural teeth. However, in some cases, extractions become necessary for maintaining overall oral health. Removing a tooth can sometimes be the best option when other restorative treatments are not viable.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Teeth play a crucial role in biting, chewing, and maintaining the structure of your mouth and jaw. However, there are several reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted. Severe tooth decay, extensive damage from an injury, or overcrowding are common reasons for extractions. In cases where a tooth is beyond repair, removing it may be the most practical and safest choice. Additionally, extractions are sometimes necessary to prevent the spread of infection or to protect the surrounding teeth and gums from further complications.

Understanding Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth are the third molars that typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 24. While some people experience no issues with their wisdom teeth, others may find that their mouths do not have enough space to accommodate them. When wisdom teeth become impacted or grow in at an angle, they can cause pain, swelling, and misalignment of the surrounding teeth. In such cases, extracting wisdom teeth can prevent future dental issues and alleviate discomfort.

Tooth Extraction Procedure

The tooth extraction procedure begins with your dentist administering a local anesthetic to numb the area around the affected tooth, ensuring a painless experience. If the tooth is impacted or difficult to remove, sedation or general anesthesia may be used for added comfort. Once the area is numb, the dentist will use specialized instruments to gently loosen the tooth from its socket. In a simple extraction, the tooth is carefully lifted out using forceps. For a surgical extraction, such as with impacted wisdom teeth, a small incision may be made in the gum to access and remove the tooth in sections. After extraction, the dentist will clean the site, place gauze to control bleeding, and provide aftercare instructions to promote healing and prevent complications.

Post-Operative Care for Tooth Extractions

After a tooth extraction, your dentist will place a small gauze pad over the extraction site to help control bleeding and encourage the formation of a blood clot, which is essential for proper healing. The gauze should be kept in place for about 30 to 45 minutes after the procedure. Avoid chewing on the gauze, and if bleeding continues, replace it with a fresh, damp gauze pad and apply light pressure for another 30 minutes. By the following day, the bleeding should subside, and the healing process will continue. To keep the extraction site clean, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water. If you experience excessive bleeding or unusual discomfort, do not hesitate to contact our office.
