Sedation Dentistry

Patient receiving nitrous oxide sedation through a mask during a dental procedure.Unfortunately, we understand that some people experience fear or anxiety when they think about a trip to the dentist. In some cases, these phobias can even prevent a person from receiving the dental care they need to maintain proper oral health. At Simonsen Dental, we’re proud to offer oral sedation dentistry: a safe, effective way to help you relax and feel at ease throughout your visit.

If dental anxiety affects how often you schedule appointments, oral sedation may be an excellent solution. During your next visit, ask us if this option is right for you. Dennis Simonsen DMD and our experienced team are extensively trained in the safe use of oral sedation to help you enjoy a more positive dental experience.

What Is Oral Sedation?

Oral sedation—sometimes called enteral sedation—involves taking a prescribed pill or liquid medication before your appointment. Common medications, such as Halcion or Valium, promote deep relaxation and reduce anxiety while keeping you conscious and responsive throughout the procedure.

Most patients describe feeling calm, drowsy, and detached from the sights and sounds of treatment. You’ll still be awake enough to answer questions, but many people remember little to nothing about the procedure afterward.

Oral sedation is especially beneficial for patients who:
•  Experience dental anxiety or phobia
•  Have a sensitive gag reflex
•  Struggle to stay comfortable during longer procedures
•  Have had negative dental experiences in the past

To ensure your comfort and safety, oral sedation is used along with a local anesthetic, which numbs the treatment area and eliminates pain or discomfort. Because the effects of the medication can linger for several hours, you’ll need someone to drive you home after your visit.

Relax with Oral Sedation Dentistry

If you’ve been putting off dental care due to fear or anxiety, oral sedation can help you get the treatment you need in total comfort. To learn more or find out if you’re a candidate, call (503) 213-7004 and schedule your appointment today!
