Dentures

If you choose dentures, you will receive a removable prosthetic set of teeth designed to replace missing teeth and any supporting soft tissues. When selecting dentures, it is important to understand that there are two types: complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures provide a full set of teeth and are necessary if you have lost all of your natural teeth. Partial dentures, on the other hand, are ideal if you still have some remaining teeth. Whether you have lost teeth due to decay, injury, or gum disease, dentures can restore your smile and improve your oral health.

Dentures can significantly enhance your ability to eat and speak, functions that many people often take for granted. If you are considering dentures, scheduling a consultation with our team of experienced dentists at Simonsen Dental is a great first step. We will review your options and determine a personalized treatment plan that best suits your needs.

Conventional and Immediate Dentures

When considering dentures, you should know that there are two types of complete dentures: conventional and immediate. Conventional dentures are typically placed in your mouth about eight to 12 weeks after your teeth have been removed, allowing time for the gum tissue to heal. Immediate dentures, on the other hand, are pre-made and can be placed immediately after tooth extraction. This allows you to have replacement teeth without waiting for the healing process to complete. However, because gums and bones shrink over time, especially after tooth removal, immediate dentures often require adjustments to ensure a proper fit. As a result, they should be considered a temporary solution before transitioning to conventional dentures.

The Denture-Making Process

If you decide to get dentures, the process involves multiple appointments over a few weeks. Initially, we will take impressions and measurements of your jaw, ensuring the proper fit and alignment of your dentures. A model of the dentures will be created to match the exact shape and position of the final product. Once the final denture is cast, we will make any necessary adjustments to ensure a comfortable and secure fit.

Adjusting to Your New Dentures

When you first receive your dentures, it will take time to adjust to your new smile. Initially, you may experience slight irritation, soreness, or an increase in saliva production. These issues are common and typically subside as your mouth adapts. Your dentures may feel loose or awkward at first, but over time, the muscles in your cheeks and tongue will learn to hold them in place, allowing you to wear them with confidence and ease. If discomfort persists, be sure to consult with your dentist for adjustments.

Proper Denture Care

When not in use, keep your dentures in a safe place covered in water to prevent them from drying out. Just like natural teeth, dentures require daily brushing to remove food particles and plaque. Additionally, it is essential to maintain good oral hygiene by cleaning your gums, cheeks, tongue, and the roof of your mouth.

At Simonsen Dental, our dentists are dedicated to providing personalized dental care and improving your quality of life with dentures. Call our office today to schedule a consultation by dialing (503) 213-7004.
