Dental Exams

A male patient smiling and interacting with a dentist during a consultation, with advanced dental imaging equipment visible in the background. A dental exam includes a comprehensive evaluation of your teeth and gums. During your visit, you will receive a professional cleaning, X-rays, and a thorough checkup. Regular dental exams help you stay informed about your oral health and provide guidance on how to properly care for your teeth. If left untreated, oral health issues can become serious and painful. By scheduling a dental exam every six months, you can take proactive steps to protect your oral health. If your exam reveals issues such as cavities or gingivitis, you can promptly schedule treatment to prevent further complications.

If you are experiencing pain, discomfort, or have not visited the dentist in over six months, our team at Simonsen Dental is here to help. We will create a personalized treatment plan that fits your needs and schedule, ensuring that your experience is as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

What Happens During a Dental Exam?

Your dental exam will include X-rays, a professional cleaning, and a detailed assessment by the dentist.

X-Rays

X-rays allow your dentist to check the roots of your teeth and assess the health of your jawbone. They provide a detailed view of cavities, gum disease, and bone loss. During the X-ray process, a lead apron will be placed over your body for protection, while the dentist stands behind a protective barrier. You will bite down on a small piece of plastic as the scanner captures images from various angles to ensure a complete view of your mouth.

Professional Cleaning

A dental hygienist will perform a thorough cleaning to remove plaque and tartar buildup. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that can harden into tartar, which can only be removed by a professional. After the plaque and tartar are removed, your hygienist will brush and floss your teeth, providing you with tips on effective brushing and flossing techniques to maintain optimal oral hygiene at home.

As a final step, your hygienist may apply a fluoride treatment to strengthen your enamel and help prevent cavities. Fluoride treatments are especially beneficial for children, as they are more prone to cavities than adults.

Dental Checkup

Once the cleaning is complete, your dentist will perform a comprehensive examination, which includes:
•  Checking your teeth and gums for signs of decay or disease
•  Reviewing your X-rays
•  Assessing your bite alignment
•  Screening for oral cancer

When Should I Bring My Child for an Exam?

Your child's first dental exam should take place around their first birthday. After that, they should visit the dentist every six months. If you have concerns about tooth decay or gum issues, more frequent visits may be necessary. Early dental visits allow for the timely detection and treatment of developmental issues, helping to prevent more serious dental problems in the future. Preventative care is especially crucial during childhood to establish a strong foundation for lifelong oral health. If your child is nervous about visiting the dentist, reassure them that regular checkups are essential for maintaining a healthy smile.

Our team at Simonsen Dental is dedicated to providing compassionate and gentle care for patients of all ages. Call (503) 213-7004 today to schedule your next dental exam!
