Cleanings

Our team at Simonsen Dental encourages patients to schedule regular dental cleanings every six months in order to maintain proper dental health and protect your teeth. Preventative dentistry helps keep unwanted problems from occurring.

What Should I Expect?

A dental cleaning is a simple procedure, and if it happens regularly, and you can maintain your dental health. Your cleaning will be performed by one of our dental hygienists, who will remove plaque from your teeth. Hardened plaque can only be removed by a dental professional. Excessive amounts of plaque cause bad breath and cavities, and it will only lead to more pressing issues down the road. Flossing daily, which is an important home practice, will help to prevent plaque buildup. We also offer deep cleanings if you are a patient with excessive plaque buildup, but these are usually not required unless advised.

Another significant step is the physical examination. When you visit our practice, our dentist will give a thorough physical exam of your mouth. We will use a mirror and light that enables us to observe every crevice of your mouth for potential concerns. If you have any tooth or gum decay, we will be able to spot it during a cleaning. By spotting the problem early, you can prevent further damage, which is why it is important to receive cleanings regularly.

We will also x-ray your jaw once a year as part of the physical exam during a cleaning. A fluoride treatment should be applied to strengthen your teeth and prevent cavities in the future. For the final step of the cleaning, your teeth will be polished with a paste that removes stains and for a fresh new sparkle.

Why Cleanings Are Necessary

If you wait too long between visits, there is more potential for problems to be overlooked and grow worse. Scheduling biannual visits to our dentist for necessary cleanings, can help ensure proper dental health.

Problems such as cavities and stains will grow worse if left untreated. Gum disease and other serious issues may develop. Going without dental treatment for months will result in more dental work. If a serious problem starts, visits to the dentist will need to occur even more often than every six months.

Additionally, if dental health problems affect other areas of your health, you will have more issues to deal with. One example is how gum disease can lead to respiratory complications if untreated. This is why quality oral care is vital to our health overall.
